Discussion «Us and Them in PostExile: History, Life Stories, and Literature»
On March 5, the Kuldīga District Museum invites everyone to a discussion exploring the experiences of the Latvian exile and post-exile communities, focusing on belonging, identity, and the boundaries between «us» and «them».
After the Second World War, the lives of thousands of Latvians took them far from their homeland. They built new homes abroad while keeping Latvia alive in their hearts — its language, culture, and the dream of a free nation. When Latvia regained its independence, returning home became possible. Yet this also gave rise to new questions: Where is home, really? Which world do I belong to? And are the boundaries between «us» and «them» ever truly clear-cut?
The discussion will feature three researchers, who will share insights from their work:
- Historian Kristīne Beķere will provide an overview of the history of the Latvian exile community.
- Historian and life-story researcher Maija Krūmiņa will explore people’s personal experiences and perceptions of the distinction between «us» and «them» across different historical periods.
- Literary scholar Elvis Friks will examine these themes through the lens of literature, with particular attention to Aina Zemdega’s novel «Inheritance».
