Daina Grosa Participates in Radio Programme on the History of the Latvian Exile Community

On 20 January 2025, Daina Grosa, a researcher at the Faculty of Humanities, University of Latvia (Institute of Philosophy and Sociology), took part in the Radio Marija programme The Sinful and the Divine in History (hosted by Inese Runce). The discussion focused on the role of the Latvian exile community in supporting Latvia, particularly in the context of the Ādolfs Grosbergs Memorial Scholarship.

During the programme, Daina Grosa introduced the newly launched research project The Post-Exile Phenomenon: Transformations and Transitions in the Latvian Exile Community after 1991, which examines the Latvian exile community following the restoration of Latvia’s independence from a variety of perspectives.

She also shared her personal experience of growing up in the Latvian exile community in Australia and reflected on how these communities have evolved over time as generations have changed, Latvia regained its independence, and members of the new Latvian diaspora joined existing communities. The determination and strong sense of mission of the post-war exile generation to preserve Latvian identity abroad have ensured that many of the larger communities remain active today, with fourth- and even fifth-generation Latvian descendants continuing to participate in community life.
