Professor Emeritus at the University of Bristol; since 2013, supervisor of oral history research group at the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology at the University of Latvia. Has done field-work in South Wales, India and Latvia. Author of more than 90 scientific publications, among the most important: « The Testimony of Life: Narrative and Memory in Post-Soviet Latvia» (London, New York: Routledge, 1998), « Empathy and Healing: Essays in Medical and Narrative Anthropology» (New York, Oxford: Berghahn Books, 2007). In 2013, became an honorary doctor of Rīga Stradiņš University (Dr. Honoris Causa).
